Our Courses

Art Holidays in FranceOur Courses: Are a week in duration, spent working out in the field as well as in the studio and incorporate drawing,  water colour, acrylics and other mixed media, mainly on paper (oils can be accommodated but not recommended due to long drying times and problematic transportation home).

David (your tutor) is well versed in most media and styles whether yours is contemporary abstract, or more traditional, his tutoring will compliment your style and preference.

Most materials are provided except:

*Please bring a selection of your own brushes/pencils etc.

*Also a cardboard tube for transporting work back home.

*Everything else including all paints, charcoal and other media as well as drawing boards and easels are provided.

As a group we will go out and about exploring the many beautiful places, views and features of the Bearn, the quaint ancient French and Basque villages, the Gave’s (mountain rivers), the mountains and coast. We will be drawing and colour sketching plaine air looking at composition, light, tone and form. The subject matter is completely open and you are free to choose what ever takes your eye, whether it is figurative, landscape (architectural or natural) small details or large vistas. We will then bring our visual field work back to the studio to use as a basis from which to create further work from or for reworking and refining, David is versed in using many techniques that will help and encourage you in your creativity.

What ever your style David believes in being expressive and free in creating work and he will encourage you to really ‘feel‘ this yourself. David is quoted as saying “I believe all great art is born from emotion, the greater the emotion the greater the work of art...”

The courses are open to all, whether you are travelling on your own, or a in a couple or group. All are welcome:  novices starting out, intermediate or advanced artists wishing to further their development. David enjoys helping others further their potential and have a fulfilling and rewarding experience.

Note: The studio is a very old, beautiful and rustic barn at Maison Saffores, It is always open for artist guests who are able to work as late as they like.

The weather in this area is usually beautiful with a wonderful temperate warm climate. But due to the proximity of the mountains it can unpredictably change, so we recommend bringing a range of summer and warmer clothing. Also a light water proof coat and sensible walking shoes are advised.
